The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), developed by the USGS in cooperation with the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN), contains information about almost 2 million physical and cultural geographic features in the United States.

Its Query Form is at http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form

It lists 64 different types of features, such as cemeteries, churches, populated places, post offices, schools, etc.

On the Query Form, when you enter the State, click on the County Name for a drop down menu of all the counties. Then select one of the 64 Feature Types and it will list them all for your selection.

For Monmouth County, it lists:

  • 39 cemeteries
  • 53 churches
  • 235 populated places
  • 1 post offices
  • 135 schools
And of course many, many others.

Then it offers you federal and local maps to help locate the particular place you are searching.

It is a very helpful site, so check it out. You might like to bookmark it as well.
